Description<\/strong> Join Rwandan author Scholastique Mukasonga as she explores ideas of mourning and exile in the wake of the Rwandan genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of her most recent book, “Igifu,” the New York Times writes that it “depicts the lives of Rwanda\u2019s Tutsis from their exile in the 1960s to the genocide of the \u201990s. These stories follow the broad strokes of the author\u2019s own life, though, unlike Mukasonga\u2019s prior books \u201cCockroaches\u201d and \u201cThe Barefoot Woman,\u201d they are less explicitly autobiographical. Instead, she mediates the personal through fable to convey the sense of a collective past . . . The devastation in Mukasonga\u2019s stories is only amplified by the short story form. \u201cIgifu\u201d is notably slim, as though to suggest all that still hasn\u2019t been told.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
