Dear readers,
It is with great emotion that I share with you the news of my new book, “Already LongScholastique Mukasonga’s New Book — Déjà jadis, déjà demain Ago, Already Tomorrow” (Déjà jadis, déjà demain), available in bookstores on May 7, 2026.
This collection brings together nine short stories that have lived with me for a long time, and that I hope will now live with you. Within these pages, my imagination wanders from the myths of our origins — biblical and Rwandan — all the way to the most vertiginous Afrofuturist utopias. From Adam and Eve fleeing Eden out of sheer boredom, to suffocating megacities haunted by mysterious wolves, I wanted to explore that deeply human longing for an elsewhere we never quite reach.
You will find here, I believe, what is dearest to me: the memory of traditional Rwanda, its tales, its voices, its figures — but this time woven into the dystopias of tomorrow. The most ancient past and the most uncertain future answer one another in these stories, sometimes with gravity, sometimes with humor. Because I also wanted to smile while writing these pages.
Already Long Ago, Already Tomorrow: the title says almost everything. That our beginnings resemble our endings. That the myths handed down to us may be the very ones we will pass on. And that between the two lies the short story — a form I love so dearly, because it allows us to leap from one world to another without ever losing the thread of what is human.
I cannot wait for you to discover these nine stories. And above all, I cannot wait to know which ones will resonate with you, which ones will carry you elsewhere.
See you on May 7, 2026, at your local bookstore.
With all my gratitude, Scholastique Mukasong
