The New York Times - Book review : Barefoot Woman by Scholastique Mukasonga - Rwanda genocide literature memoir

Journalist’s Julian Lucas for The New York Times reviewed my book “The Barefoot Woman” in his essay intituled “Turning the ‘Curse of Ham’ Into a Blessing“. Thanks to him for the enlightening African comparative study. My third book translate in english “The Barefoot Woman” is out now on Archipelago Books

Mukasonga is a master of subtle shifts in register — a skill inherited, perhaps, from the Rwandan traditions of intricate courtesy and assiduous privacy that Stefania maintained. She turns everything over restlessly: In her prose, poignant reminiscences sharpen into bitter ironies, or laments reveal flashes of comedy, determination, defiance.
